Rockin’ It!
I know there are many pages out there with similar information. However, I wanted to share the ways that I use to optimize SEO for my WordPress Blog
1. Permalinks
When you first install wordpress the default permalink structure will be index.php?p=123. This format is horrible for SEO purposes. You should go to OPTIONS>PERMALINKS in the admin page and select the format you want. The best format should always include your post title. The format we use is /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
2. Update Services (PING)
When you update or make a new post on your blog you will want to notify places that you have updated your blog. You can get an amazing list of ping services at Update_Services. To enter these ping services just go to the admin page and go to OPTIONS>WRITING and scroll down and paste them in.
3. Page Titles
You will want to have the title of your post come up first in your webpage title rather than the sites title. Most themes these days come with the changes already in place. If you have an old theme you should download the WordPress 2 SEO plugin here.
4. Tags
Tags are the next big wave on the internet. By using tags on your site more than one of your posts will most likely use the same tag and this allows for linking posts all over your website. This can possibly improve your site when search engines visit your site. It can also help with Technorati tags. A good plugin for tags is Tag Warrior. Many other people also use Bunny Tags.
5. Related Posts
When people are reading an article on your site it usually means that they are interested in that article. If you want to keep them on your page why not show them a bunch of posts that are related to the one they are currently reading. This is a sure fire way of keeping the visitor on your site and improving SEO by giving the search engine bots more links to dig deeper into your site. A great plugin for this can be found here.
6. Google Sitemaps
Google has a service called Sitemaps that allows webmasters select which pages they would like indexed in the search engine. More can be read here.
7. Get Backlinks
The more backlinks you have to your site means the more value your site has. It will improve your standings in the search engine and will also improve your Page Rank. The more quality links you have to your site, the higher your site will rank in the search engines. So get out there and start getting quality relevant links to your site or blog.
8. Write Great Content
Everyone will always tell you, the key to a great and successful site is great content. This is 100% true. If your site is not updated regularly (Almost on a daily basis) with interesting articles why would people want to come back to your site. If people keep coming back to your site they will link to your site or your articles. If they like them enough they may even put them Digg them which will bring in large amounts of traffic.
9. Contact Page
You need interaction with your reader. The easier it is for them to contact you, the easier it is to build links and relationships with your readers. There is a very simple plugin that allows you to add a contact form to any of your pages. It can be found here.
10. Landing Sites
This plugin is similar to the related posts plugin except that it is geared towards the search engine referrers. When a user lands on your page from a search engine, this plugin will display all other posts that match their search engine query so that they will stay on your page for longer.

Great Post. Another good way to do your permalinks is /%category%/%postname%/ Ive used this way for quite some time now. I think it helps include an extra keyword into the URL but it is all about prefrence.
Sujan, be careful with that format. It’s unwise to use only the title as a unique identifier of your post. Include the post_id in there as well.
Long titles break all the time. If you happen to aggregate posts from other sources, DEFINATELY ensure you use some other unique post reference.
Cheers,
JL
